Capital Quiz
The Capital Quiz, now 20 years old, is an annual knock-out quiz competition held Jan – Mar and open to teams of three lesbian gay bisexual and transgender people. It is co-organised by Homo Promos and the London Monday Group (a social group for gay men). Homo Promos organises the questions and HP Director Peter Scott-Presland acts as Quizmaster, while LMG provides the admin and other organisation. We also use the quiz to raise money for charity, and this year our choice is The Food Chain. This year 26 teams entered. Many pubs enter teams, as do gay groups. But it could just as easily be an informal group of friends. But other people who aren’t in teams come along, take part in a Table Quiz and generally enjoy the show. The Quiz was originally sponsored by the late, much-lamented weekly gay freesheet, Capital Gay. When the paper folded, it was taken on first by the pub Central Station and currently by The Black Cap in Camden Town. The Black Cap donated a first and second prize of £300 and £150, while the 3rd and 4th teams picked up £120 and £60 respectively. The 2006 winners were Black Cap 2nd team – no, it wasn’t a fix for the host pub. At the end of the competition we do one final fundraising event for our charity, which is a novelty quiz night, to be held at the Black Cap. This year it’s on Monday May 29th (Bank Holiday Monday) and will feature a play-off between the 2006 winners and a drag team, a Strip Quiz, and a general pub quiz with lots of prizes. Do come along.
